Box Office Report: Sherlock Holmes debuts at #2 with an impressive $65M+; helps Hollywood’s Highest-Grossing Weekend Ever

Wall Street Journal reports that  Kelly Reilly's new film Sherlock Holme was one of a pack of films to set Hollywood’s biggest box-office weekend of all time. As previously posted here: 'Sherlock Holmes' outsmarts B.O. competition on Christmas Day, it made a Christmas Day opening day record with $24.9 million (slightly beating Avatar, but unfortunately trailed it on its weekend B.O. total...perhaps Avatar's 3D tickets cost more, so that's probably why it made more than this film)...and now with over $65 million+ for its estimated total B.O. weekend result. Final numbers will be released sometime late Monday or early Tuesday.

With a U.S. box-office total over the last three days of $278 million, this weekend’s films beat the old record of $260.8 million from July of 2008, according to estimates from Hollywood.com. Final numbers will be released later in the week.

James Cameron’s 3-D epic “Avatar” (Fox) took the top slot at the box office over the Christmas Day weekend, bringing in $75 million.

Director Guy Ritchie’s action-oriented retooling of “Sherlock Holmes” grabbed second place with $65.4 million. The Warner Bros. detective movie, co-starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law, marks a huge comeback for Ritchie, who is coming off of a tumultuous marriage to Madonna and a string of box office disappointments, including 2002’s “Swept Away.” “Sherlock Holmes” had set a new record for a Christmas Day opening by grossing $24.9 million on Friday.
